Mert's artistic ability was first noticed and brought out by his sixth grade teacher. He was first encouraged to enter a national contest at that time. From there, he continued to do miscellaneous drawing in colored pencils. In his later years, while making a living as a timber cutter and logging contractor, he combined his artistic ability with the chainsaw and started creating beautiful masterpieces of bears and other wildlife. His work has since been written about and featured in many magazines, newspapers and television. He has added finely detailed wood carving and antler carvings. His sculptures are created using chainsaws and the finer pieces are done with dentist drills. There is no duplication process. Each piece is an original work of art.
